STATISTICS SHEET FOR FOX1000
|
FOX1000 is a microprocessor based thermal
conductivity instrument for testing in accordance with ASTM C 518 and ISO 8301.
The plate size is 1041 mm x 762 mm (41" x 30"). The test chamber has front and
back doors which allows specimens that are 1050 mm wide and of unlimited length
to be tested. The thickness of the sample can be from 0 to 100 mm (0 to 4"
thick). The upper plate is lowered onto the sample to obtain good contact over
the huge area of these giant plates. This allows such large samples to be
tested. It was designed specifically for Vacuum Panels of large size. The
instrument produces conductivity results accurate to within 1% with 0.2%
repeatability and 0.5% reproducibility. Advanced solid state dual zone
heating/cooling and 4" of insulation around the test chamber guarantee accurate
heat flow readings. Both instrument plates can operate between 0°C and 45°C
(32°F and 113°F) with heat flow in either direction.
A high output Thin Film Heat Flux Transducer, developed by LaserComp, is
permanently bonded to the surface of each plate. The transducers are of the
integrating type with an 200 mm (8" by 8") active area in the center. Overall
thickness is only 1.8 mm (0.070"), precluding heat flow distortion. A type E
thermocouple is bonded in the center of each transducer and both are sealed to
insure consistent precision over time. Because each is within 0.1 mm of the
sample's surface they provide accurate readings of the sample's surface
temperature and heat flux. The same thermocouple is used for control of the
plate temperature.
FOX1000 utilizes state of the art analog and digital electronics developed
specifically for thermal conductivity testing instruments. A Digital Signal
Processor and a 24 bit Analog to Digital Converter form the core of the
instrument. Temperature control to +/-0.01°C is easily accomplished. Thanks to
the powerful data acquisition system and the unique low thermal mass design of
the cooling/heating plates, setpoints are attained with extreme speed. Typical
testing temperatures can be reached and controlled in a few minutes. Specimens
can be tested repeatedly at any one temperature. Alternatively, up to nine
temperatures can be entered for each specimen in which case the instrument will
automatically advance to the next temperature once equilibrium conditions have
been established.
In order to minimize condensation problems, the test chamber is sealed from the
exterior environment, and provisions are made to allow for a dry air or
nitrogen purge.
The plate movement is controlled by four independent stepping motors positioned
at each corner. The desired thickness can be set directly through the keypad
(useful for compressible specimens). Alternatively, for rigid specimens "auto
thickness" can be used where the plates will automatically stop at the specimen
and display the actual thickness. In both cases +/-0.025mm (+/-0.001")
precision is achieved through the use of a sophisticated digital plate position
control system with readout in all four corners of the specimen.
The FOX1000 is a stand alone instrument. It can be connected to a user provided
IBM compatible computer with Microsoft Windows. The computer with Win_Therm
Software serves as the user interface and data storage device. A single RS232
cable (provided with the instrument) connects the FOX1000 to the user provided
computer. Once installed on a computer operating under Microsoft Windows, the
software provides complete control of the instrument at all times. Through a
series of windows all the test parameters can be setup and changed at any time
during the test. The parameters include: test temperature, PID control
parameters, and equilibrium conditions. All selected data is automatically
stored on the computer's hard disk. Once the test conditions have been set and
the test started, the computer can be used to display any desired outputs in a
series of windows. Alternatively, the computer can be used for any other task
as long as the user stays in Windows. This could include reviewing old data or
preparing reports.
Any two instruments from our Fox line can be controlled by one computer with
the standard Win_Therm Software. With modestly priced additional software and
hardware up to a total of 8 Fox instruments can be controlled simultaneously by
one computer. This is possible in part due to the fact that each Fox instrument
is a self contained unit with a sophisticated Digital Signal Processor
controlling all aspects of its operation and the external computer serves
primarily as an input/output and data storage device. Input power is 220V
single phase at less than 10A. Cooling water at 18°C (65°F) or less is also
required.
